About
You have arrived at Project Beacon, an attempt to make a usable visual editor for XML based documentation. It has a different approach then standard WYSIWYG editors which at times tend to frustrate users by producing bad content. While being more restrictive it does try and produce good output and valid XML.
Beacon is aimed at being a generic XML editor. Any XML format that has an ultimate output format like PDF or HTML is a good candidate for a beacon-editable document. Beacon allows the user to edit the output of that XML document and will automatically generate the input corresponding to the output the user sees. It will eventually be implemented as a library (like TinyMCE) and two reference applications will be released (built in PHP and Python).
Beacon has been under development for long (3 years?) because the development has come in bursts (few months a year). As a result the community adoption has been slow. This website hopes to give a brand name to Beacon and provide project management tools to the community for better development.
Feel free to look around and drop us a note. If you’d like to join then we’ll be happy to talk to you.
The developers can be found at #beacon on irc.freenode.net.
